Dili in brief
Dili stretches along the north coast for about 10 kilometres, from the airport and Comoro in the west to Cristo Rei in the east. The old centre sits in the middle, around the waterfront and the government palace. It is low-rise, green and quiet by Southeast Asian standards, with more pick-up trucks than tuk-tuks.
Most visitors spend two or three days here at the start and end of a trip. That is enough for the main sights and for sorting out practicalities: cash, a SIM card and transport onwards.
Where to stay
Choose the waterfront for a short first visit, Comoro near the airport and Timor Plaza for longer stays, and Lecidere or Bidau for cheaper rooms. Our Dili accommodation guide compares every hotel we list. Shortlists cover hotels with a pool, hotels near the airport, where to stay before the Atauro ferry and the Comoro district. For good value with a pool, see Hotel Dongshan (our partner) in Comoro. Staying longer? Read monthly rentals in Dili.
Where to eat
Eat grilled fish at the beachfront stalls in the evening, Timorese food at Agora Food Studio or Dilicious, and drink the excellent local coffee at Letefoho. Warung meals cost USD 2 to 4 and international mains USD 10 to 15. Our guide to where to eat in Dili covers every restaurant and café we recommend, and Timorese food explains the dishes to order.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dili worth visiting?
Yes, for two or three days. It has a lovely waterfront, Cristo Rei, good snorkelling and diving close to town, and moving museums on the independence struggle. It is also the base for Atauro and trips elsewhere.
Is Dili walkable?
The waterfront and centre are walkable, but the heat makes long walks tiring and pavements are uneven. Use taxis for Cristo Rei, Comoro and the airport, and after dark.
