Where to stay
Where to Stay in Dili
Most visitors spend at least two nights in Dili, and almost everyone passes through it. The city is small, so where you stay matters less for sightseeing than for what you want nearby: the sea, the shopping mall, the airport or cheap food.

Hotels are concentrated in four areas. The waterfront along Avenida de Portugal is the most pleasant for walking and sunsets. Central Dili is closest to government offices. Comoro, in the west near the airport and Timor Plaza, is quieter and suits longer stays. Lecidere and Bidau, east of the centre, have most of the cheaper guesthouses and are on the way to Cristo Rei.
Standards are simpler than in Bali at the same price. Expect air conditioning and hot water in mid-range hotels, but check Wi-Fi quality and generator back-up if you need to work. Prices below are the typical rates we saw in September 2026.
Which area to choose
Waterfront (Avenida de Portugal)
The seafront strip with the promenade, sunset bars and evening fish grills. Hotel Esplanada and several mid-range hotels are here. Best for a short first visit.
Central Dili
The government quarter and old commercial streets around Colmera and Caicoli. Walkable to the Resistance Museum and the waterfront. Hotel Timor is the landmark.
Comoro and the airport
Newer, quieter and 10 to 15 minutes from the centre, next to Timor Plaza with its supermarket, food court and ATMs. Good for longer stays and early flights.
Lecidere and Bidau
East of the centre, with the cheapest guesthouses (roughly USD 25 to 50) and a short walk to the water. On the road to Areia Branca and Cristo Rei.
