Quick answer · as of September 2026

Atauro is a mountainous island about 25 km north of Dili with some of the most species-rich reefs ever surveyed. Take the ferry (USD 4 to 5, six days a week, about 2 to 3 hours) or a fast boat (about USD 70), stay at least two nights in a Beloi eco-lodge with meals included, and bring all the cash you need.

Why go

Atauro is the easiest escape from Dili and the best snorkelling and diving in the country. The island is steep and dry, with a string of villages along the east coast and reefs dropping into very deep water. There are no big resorts, few cars and almost no mobile signal away from Beloi and Vila.

Before you go

  • Withdraw cash in Dili: there are no ATMs on Atauro and cards are rarely accepted.
  • Book your lodge ahead for weekends and October–November (whale season).
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a torch and your own snorkel mask if you have one.
  • Check the ferry on the day: schedules change for weather, maintenance and holidays.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need on Atauro?

Two to three nights. A day trip leaves only 3 to 4 hours on the island once ferry times are counted.

Is Atauro good for snorkelling?

Excellent. In a 2016 Conservation International survey, Atauro's reefs averaged 253 reef fish species per site, the highest average recorded at the time. Good snorkelling starts right off the beach at Beloi.
