Five days is enough for Timor-Leste's two easiest highlights without long drives: the capital and Atauro Island. You need no car, and everything can be done by taxi and ferry.

Plan the Atauro crossing around the ferry days. The government ferry Berlin Nakroma sails from Dili on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and MV Success on Tuesday and Friday, both at 08:00. There is no ferry on Monday.

Getting around: Taxis in Dili (USD 3 to 6 a ride, USD 15 or more from the airport); ferry to Atauro (USD 4 to 5) or a fast boat (about USD 70).

Day by day

Day 1: Arrive in Dili, waterfront sunset

Arrive, check in and walk the waterfront promenade from the Farol lighthouse towards the fruit market. Eat grilled fish from the Beach Road stalls at sunset.

Overnight: Dili · Dili

Day 2: Cristo Rei, museums and Areia Branca

Climb the 570 steps to Cristo Rei early, before the heat, then swim at the beach behind the headland or at Areia Branca. In the afternoon visit the Resistance Museum and the Chega! exhibition at the former Balide prison. Withdraw enough cash for Atauro.

Overnight: Dili · Cristo Rei of Dili, Areia Branca Beach, Dili

Days 3–4: Ferry to Atauro, snorkel and walk

Take the 08:00 ferry from Dili (about 2 to 3 hours) to Beloi. Snorkel the house reef, walk to Vila, or join a boat trip to the west coast reefs. Most lodges include all meals.

Overnight: Atauro (Beloi) · Atauro Island

Day 5: Return to Dili and fly out

Take the 15:00 ferry or a morning fast boat back to Dili. If your flight is early, go back to Dili the evening before instead.

Overnight: Dili or depart · Atauro Island, Dili
