Last verified: Checked against climate data, government advice and dive operators

Quick answer · as of October 2026

The best time to visit Timor-Leste is the dry season, from about May to November, and especially June to September, when roads are passable, seas are calm and mountain views are clear. October and November add the whale migration past Dili and Atauro. The wet season, roughly December to April, brings heavy rain, landslides and closed roads.

Dili weather by month

Dili is one of the driest parts of the country, with about 780 mm of rain a year (1991–2020 averages), and August and September are the driest months. Daytime highs are around 31 to 33°C all year and nights 21 to 24°C. The sea stays warm, around 27 to 30°C. See Timor-Leste weather by month for each month's rainfall, temperatures, holidays and events.

Best time for each activity

  • Beaches and snorkelling: June to September, when the sea is calmest and clearest.
  • Diving: all year, with the calmest conditions June to September.
  • Whale watching: mid-October to November. See whale watching.
  • Mount Ramelau: June to November for the best chance of a clear sunrise. Bring warm clothes.
  • Road trips east to Jaco: May to November; June to September is most reliable.

Travelling in the wet season

It is possible, but plan for delays. Rain usually comes in afternoon downpours rather than all day, but landslides can close mountain roads and river crossings, and boat trips are cancelled in rough seas. Keep your plans flexible and avoid long drives after heavy rain.

Public holidays

Hotels in Dili fill up and offices close around the main national days. Restoration of Independence Day (20 May) and Popular Consultation Day (30 August) are the biggest. Christmas and Easter are also important in this mainly Catholic country. See all public holidays and festivals.
