Diving in Timor-Leste and Atauro: Sites, Seasons and Operators

Last verified: Checked against dive operators, PADI and published reef surveys

Quick answer · as of September 2026

Timor-Leste has excellent, uncrowded diving in the Coral Triangle. Atauro is the highlight: a 2016 Conservation International survey found an average of 253 reef fish species per site, the highest average recorded at the time. Dive centres in Dili run shore dives along the north coast and boat trips to Atauro, with shore dives from about USD 50. Whales pass from about October to November.

Why dive here

Timor-Leste sits in the Coral Triangle, and deep water close to shore brings nutrients and big marine life to healthy reefs. A fringing reef runs along much of the north coast, often starting just a few metres from the beach, so shore diving is easy. Above all, sites are quiet: you will rarely share a reef with another group.

In 2016, Conservation International surveyed ten reef sites around Atauro and found an average of 253 reef fish species per site, the highest average ever recorded at the time. One site had 315 species, and the survey logged 642 species in total.

Where to dive

  • Atauro Island: walls, slopes and coral gardens along the east coast near Beloi, and dramatic walls on the more remote west side, reached on full-day boat trips.
  • Dili's north coast: shore dives east and west of the city, reached by 4WD, from easy coral gardens to deeper slopes.
  • The far east (Com and Jaco): good snorkelling and diving in Nino Konis Santana National Park, with few facilities. Bring your own gear.

Dive centres

Several PADI dive centres operate from Dili and Atauro.

  • Dive Timor Lorosae (Dili): Dili's longest-running dive operator, established in 2000, on the waterfront with its own guesthouse. PADI courses, shore dives, Atauro trips and whale watching.
  • Compass Diving (Atauro): PADI 5 Star centre and Green Fins member at Beloi, with its own eco-lodge, speedboats and a catamaran.
  • Atauro Dive Resort (Atauro): small resort with a house reef. Shore dives USD 50, east-side boat dives USD 60 and west-side trips USD 180 for two dives (September 2026).
  • Beloi Beach Hotel (Atauro): hotel with its own dive centre.
  • Aquatica Dive Resort (Dili): day trips along the north coast and to Atauro.

Seasons and conditions

You can dive all year. Seas are calmest and clearest from June to September. Water temperatures stay at about 27 to 30°C, so a 3 mm wetsuit is plenty. Heavy rain in the wet season (roughly December to April) can reduce visibility near river mouths.

Whale season

From about October to November, pygmy blue whales and other species migrate along the north coast between Dili and Atauro. Operators such as Dive Timor Lorosae, Compass Diving and Atauro Dive Resort run whale-watching trips, and some offer in-water encounters. Nothing is guaranteed; November is often the best month.

Snorkelling

You do not need to dive to see Atauro's reefs. Good snorkelling starts off the beach at Beloi, and lodges and dive centres run snorkel boat trips. Bring your own mask if you can.

Safety

  • Check that your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation; specialist care in Timor-Leste is limited.
  • Dive with established operators and follow their briefings: currents can be strong.
  • Leave 18 to 24 hours between your last dive and your flight home.
  • Ask about crocodiles before diving or snorkelling near river mouths, especially on the south and east coasts.

Frequently asked questions

Is Timor-Leste good for diving?

Yes. It lies in the Coral Triangle, reefs start a few metres from shore along the north coast, and Atauro's reefs are among the most species-rich ever surveyed. Sites are rarely crowded.

Can you swim with whales in Timor-Leste?

Some operators run whale-watching and in-water trips during the migration, mainly October to November. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.

Is there a recompression chamber in Timor-Leste?

Specialist diving medical care is limited. Make sure your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation, and dive conservatively.
