Why Timor-Leste is good for whales

The Wetar Strait, between Dili and Atauro Island, is more than 3,000 metres deep, and it is a migration route for some of the largest animals on earth. Each year pygmy blue whales pass along Timor-Leste's north coast, close enough to be seen on day trips from Atauro.

Watching responsibly

Whales here are not hunted and the habitat is largely undisturbed; keep it that way. Choose an operator that keeps its distance, does not chase or cut off animals, limits engine noise, and backs away from resting whales and mothers with calves.

Tips

  • Take seasickness medication before you board.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and water: there is little shade on small boats.
  • Use a camera with an optical zoom.
  • Be patient. Sightings are likely in peak season but never guaranteed.

Plan the rest of your trip with Atauro Island and the best time to visit.
