Two weeks is the right length to see the country properly. The route loops east along the north coast to Jaco Island, returns to Dili, then heads south into the mountains.

Roads are slow. Dili to Baucau takes 3 to 4 hours and Jaco is 8 to 10 hours from Dili, so the plan below keeps drives to half a day where possible and includes a buffer day.

Getting around: 4WD with driver for the east and the mountains (about USD 120 to 150 a day), or public buses for Baucau and Maubisse if you are flexible. Ferry to Atauro.
