Maubisse is a cool highland town about 70 km south of Dili, around 3 hours by road. Go for the Thursday and Sunday markets, coffee farm visits and mountain scenery, and as the base for climbing Mount Ramelau. Buses from Dili's Taibessi terminal cost about USD 5. The historic Pousada de Maubisse closed in 2024, so stay in a guesthouse.

Why go
Maubisse is the heart of Timor-Leste's coffee country and a welcome break from the heat of the coast. Green hills, terraced fields and pine and eucalyptus forest surround the town, and on market days people come in from the villages to trade produce, coffee and livestock.
Getting there
It is about 3 hours from Dili by road, climbing through Aileu. Buses leave from Taibessi terminal in the early morning for about USD 5. A private car costs about USD 50 to 80 one way. The road is sealed but winding; allow extra time in the wet season.
What to do
- Markets: held on Thursday and Sunday.
- Coffee: the Timor Hybrid variety, discovered in the 1940s, was first cultivated in these highlands. Cooperatives such as Cocamau and Hakmatek offer plantation visits.
- Dokomali waterfall and walks in the surrounding hills.
- Mount Ramelau: the country's highest peak is about an hour's rough drive further on. See the Ramelau guide.
Where to stay
The Pousada de Maubisse, a hilltop Portuguese guesthouse long favoured by visitors, closed in 2024. Small guesthouses such as Sara's Guesthouse (about USD 25 to 35 with breakfast) are the main option now, and homestays in Hato Builico are closer to Ramelau. See where to stay in Maubisse and Ramelau.
Practical tips
- Bring cash from Dili; do not rely on ATMs.
- Pack a warm jacket for the evenings.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the hills.
