About the mountain

Ramelau, called Tatamailau locally, rises to 2,963 m in Ainaro municipality and is sacred to many Timorese. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands on the summit, and pilgrims climb it, especially around religious festivals. On a clear morning you can see the north and south coasts at once.

Getting there

Drive to Maubisse (about 3 hours from Dili), then about an hour on a rough road to Hato Builico, the village at the foot of the mountain. You need a 4WD or a strong motorbike for the last stretch. Most travellers hire a car with a driver from Dili and make it a two-day trip.

Where to sleep

Stay in Hato Builico so you can start walking before dawn. Alecrim Namrau Homestay costs about USD 15 per person. Staying in Maubisse means a very early drive. See where to stay.

  • Head torch with spare batteries
  • At least 1.5 litres of water and snacks

When to go

June to November gives the best chance of a clear sunrise. In the wet season, cloud often covers the summit and the road to Hato Builico can be difficult.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Mount Ramelau climb?

Moderate. It is a steady uphill walk on a clear path, but the pre-dawn start, altitude and cold make it tiring. Reasonably fit walkers manage it without trouble.

Can you climb Ramelau as a day trip from Dili?

Not realistically for sunrise. Plan two days: drive to Hato Builico (about 4 hours), sleep there, climb before dawn, then return.

Do you need a 4WD to reach Hato Builico?

Yes, or a strong motorbike. The last hour from Maubisse is on rough road.
