A week lets you combine the reef and the highlands. Atauro is reached by ferry; the mountains need a 4WD with driver, as the last hour to Hato Builico is rough.

Do Atauro first, while you are fresh, and keep a spare half day in Dili at the end in case roads or boats run late.

Getting around: Ferry or fast boat to Atauro; 4WD with driver for Maubisse and Ramelau (about USD 120 to 150 a day).
