Where NGO staff and consultants stay

Most people on assignments of one to six months stay in hotels with studios or serviced apartments, mainly in Comoro. Comoro is near the airport and the Timor Plaza mall, quieter than the centre, and a short drive from many offices. Longer assignments often move on to apartments in secure compounds.

What to check for work stays

  • Power: a generator that runs the air conditioning, not just the lights.
  • Internet: the connection type (fibre, Starlink, mobile), a speed test, and a back-up. Video calls are the real test.
  • A desk and a quiet room if you will work from your room.
  • Security: a guard or gated compound, secure parking and safe transport after dark. See safety in Timor-Leste.
  • Laundry and cleaning: included in many monthly rates, which saves time.

Invoices, receipts and payment

If your employer pays or reimburses you, sort out the paperwork before you move in.

  • Ask whether the property can issue an invoice in your organisation's name, with the dates and the full monthly amount.
  • Ask whether it accepts bank transfer: many places prefer US dollars in cash.
  • Keep receipts for every payment, including deposits.

Visas, health and insurance

  • Visa: paid work and long assignments need the correct visa before you travel, normally arranged by your employer. See the visa guide.
  • Health: medical care is limited and serious cases are evacuated to Australia or Singapore. Check your employer's insurance covers evacuation, and read the health guide.
  • Money: Timor-Leste uses the US dollar, and cards are rarely accepted. See money and ATMs.

Getting around for work

Hire a car with a driver for days of meetings, or use blue metered taxis (+670 774 7777); yellow taxis are unmetered and scarce after dark. See getting around Dili and the business travel guide.
