Business Travel to Dili: Visas, Hotels, Meetings and Holidays

Last verified: Checked against official sources and hotel information

Quick answer · as of September 2026

Short business trips to Dili usually use the USD 30 visa on arrival; paid work needs the right visa in advance. Stay in central Dili or Comoro near Timor Plaza, where the business hotels are. Allow for slow internet, cash-based payments and public holidays such as 20 May and 30 August, when offices close.

Visas for business visitors

Meetings, conferences and short consultancy visits are normally done on the visa on arrival (USD 30, 30 days). The Migration Service applies the same funds requirement to "Business Class 1" visitors as to tourists: USD 100 per entry plus USD 50 a day, unless you have a local sponsor. Paid employment and longer assignments need the correct visa before you travel. See the visa guide.

Where to stay

Business travellers mostly stay in central Dili or in Comoro, near Timor Plaza and the airport.

Working practicalities

  • Time zone: UTC+9, no daylight saving: 30 minutes behind Darwin and 1 hour ahead of Bali.
  • Internet: improving fast after the submarine cable went live in July 2026, but ask hotels about speed and back-up. Many use Starlink.
  • Payments: most local suppliers want cash or bank transfer; cards are rarely accepted.
  • Transport: hire a car with a driver for a day of meetings; taxis are scarce after dark.
  • Power: cuts happen, so choose a hotel with a generator.

Public holidays

Government offices and many businesses close on national holidays. Key dates in 2026 included 20 May (Restoration of Independence Day) and 30 August (Popular Consultation Day), along with Catholic holidays such as Good Friday (3 April), Corpus Christi (4 June) and All Saints' Day (1 November), and the Islamic holidays Idul Fitri and Idul Adha. Check the government's list before scheduling meetings.

Etiquette

Business culture is relationship-based and polite. A handshake and a few words of Tetum or Portuguese are appreciated. Dress smartly but lightly: collared shirts and trousers or modest dresses. Meetings can start late and run long; build slack into your schedule.
