LGBTQ+ Travel in Timor-Leste: Laws, Attitudes and Dili Pride
Last verified: Checked against published legal summaries and news reports

Quick answer · as of October 2026
Same-sex relations are legal in Timor-Leste, and Dili has held a Pride march every year since 2017, with support from political leaders. But same-sex couples have no legal recognition, there are no specific anti-discrimination laws, and society is conservative and strongly Catholic. Keeping public affection discreet is sensible, as it is for all couples.

The law
Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Timor-Leste for both men and women. There is no legal recognition of same-sex couples, and no specific anti-discrimination law, although the 2009 penal code treats bias based on sexual orientation as an aggravating circumstance in criminal cases.
Pride and public attitudes
Timor-Leste is often described as one of the more accepting countries in the region. Dili's first Pride march was held in July 2017 with government support, and it has been held every year since, with thousands taking part in later years. In 2022 the march ended at the Presidential Palace with the support of the president, and in 2024 the president was a witness at the Darwin wedding of a lesbian couple who worked at the palace.
Society is still conservative and strongly Catholic, and attitudes outside Dili can be more traditional. Local LGBTQ+ groups report discrimination and family pressure, so acceptance at the top does not mean acceptance everywhere.
Practical tips
- Keep public displays of affection low-key, as all couples do in Timor-Leste.
- No law stops couples sharing a room in hotels, guesthouses or lodges.
- Dili's waterfront bars and cafés are relaxed and international.
- Pride is held in Dili every year; follow local LGBTQ+ organisations on social media for dates.
